A lightweight plastic plate that follows the shape of the nail is glued to the tip of the natural nail in order to add length. Acrylic, gel, fibreglass or another mixture is then applied on top of the extension and is usually ‘cured’ in order to secure the extension and add strength and shine. Lets face it there is not much you can’t do with acrylics. The only limit is your imagination be it their shape, size, accessories or finish.
There are plenty of reasons to get artificial fingernails. Maybe you're going to a wedding or reunion and you want to look sharp. Or perhaps you've had trouble growing your nails long and need assistance.
Nail extensions
A lightweight plastic plate that follows the shape of the nail is glued to the tip of the natural nail in order to add length. Acrylic, gel, fibreglass or another mixture is then applied on top of the extension and is usually ‘cured’ in order to secure the extension and add strength and shine.
Nail overlays
Overlays skip the extension step, and instead of adding artificial length onto the nail, the strengthening mixture is simply applied directly onto the natural nail in order to add strength and durability.
Home care advice:
> Use cuticle oil every night just before going to bed. This will nourish the root of the natural nail allowing it to produce stronger, more flexible and non-flaking natural nail.
> Use protective gloves for housework, gardening DIY etc as household chemicals will strip natural nails and skin of natural oils, thus, affecting it's look and condition.
> Take care around extreme heat or naked flames as nail extensions may melt.
> Do not pick off the extensions as this will remove the upper layer of your natural nails, thus causing damage. Have them removed professionally in an appropriate manner (acrylic or soak-off gel) or special filing technique (file-off gel) followed by a manicure to keep natural nails in good shape.
> It is advised to carry out infills every 2 to 3 weeks, otherwise the product will become weaker (due to wear and tear and incorrect structure) and chances to break the nails are higher.
